This turmeric rice is one of our easiest and quickest rice dishes to make. Fragrant, colorful and with fresh herbs. This is our go to when the plain rice just won’t cut it.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

When we say simple we really mean simple. Gather these ingredients and have a side dish on the table in just about 20 minutes.

Basmati Rice: We love to use basmati rice for this but you can also use jasmine rice or what you have. Rinse your rice and let it dry. For a start, we like to toast our rice in oil with onions and garlic. The aroma is a tell tale of what’s to come.

Turmeric Powder: Turmeric has an array of health benefits, but we are using it here for culinary purposes mainly. For the bold, warm earthy notes that really elevates the overall flavor of the rice. Try not to add too much as turmeric could be bitter in excess.

Chicken Broth: This makes it for me. Vegans and vegetarians can use vegetable broth, but chicken broth really adds a whole ‘nother depth of flavor.

Onions and Garlic: Our favorite go to aromatics and they very much complement the earthy notes of the turmeric.

Fresh Coriander: Once your rice is ready, fluffing it with a good hand pinch of chopped fresh cilantro brings in some color contrast and really ties everything together.

MAKING TURMERIC RICE

Our first step in toasting the rice and we do this as we saute the onions and garlic. Saute your onions for two to three minutes, then add you washed, dried rice and start toasting. It is important for your rice to be dry so we are actually toasting and not steaming the rice.

After about 3 minutes, add in turmeric and garlic and stir until garlic is just fragrant. This should take under a minute. Avoid burning the garlic.

The final step is adding your broth. There will be a vigorous steam so be careful and add broth slowly. Season with salt and black pepper, cover with foil and a tight lid to trap in the steam and you’re done. After 20 minutes, remove from heat, let stand for another 5 minutes and fluff with some chopped fresh coriander.

TO SERVE

Serve with some sauteed greens and your favorite protein to make this a complete meal. Here’s a Salmon or Chicken recipe that will pair wonderfully with this turmeric rice. When you get to make and enjoy this, let us know what you think on our social meddia platforms
